Twenty-Four

ATHAR

Morning light spills through the window screen, brightening the room. I shift to look down at my mate as she lies beneath the furs and blankets. Her plush body tucks against mine. She is a perfect fit for me; her softness complements my hardness.

I yearn to worship her, to provide a life of luxury. Instead, I can only offer her this old tower. A place that even I don’t particularly care for. It creates a lonely life, living on the border of our territory.

My life has been largely devoted to training as a Guardian for our village, beginning as a youngling. Batu has guided me from some of my earliest memories. When Batu selected me from among all drakoon, an insignificant youngling, to become the future commander, I overflowed with joy. I spent cycles training under his watchful eye, traveling far and wide, constantly learning new skills. It is the life I chose.

It isn’t the life that Christina deserves.

If I train hard, Batu might finally grant me the position of Commander. Then I could return to the village again, where Christina would be safe. There, she will have others for company, besides the old, grumpy male.

Could she be happy there, away from her people though?

I won’t always be able to be near her. I regularly fly between outposts for inspections, as well as go on patrols. Plus, if there’s a beast roaming our lands, or a raid...

I breathe out, dispelling my fears. Now is the time to focus on my mate, not things that have not yet happened.

I adjust my wing to cover my mate more. The overwhelming urge to protect and care for her swells within me. I long to hide her from the world and spend my time cherishing her. I want to hoard her entirely for myself.

At my movement, Chrissy stirs. The fine hairs on her eyes flutter, and then she gazes up at me with an unfocused expression. A soft smile plays at her lips.

“Good morning, mate,” I whisper the words to her, longing to capture this moment for the rest of my life. I’ve called her my mate plenty of times, but today it feels special. She accepted me fully last night - claiming bite and all.

“Morning, Athar,” she mumbles. She covers her face as she yawns, then stretches her plush body against mine. Suddenly her relaxed posture stiffens.

“We had sex last night,” she says with more than a little trepidation.

My own anxiety heightens. Unbidden, my wings stiffen.

“Do you regret your decision?” My throat feels raw, my tongue heavy. “Did I not please you?”

“What? No!” Suddenly, Chrissy throws back her head and laughs. “Athar, you were amazing. More than that. You shouldn’t even have to ask. We probably kept Batu up all night with how much noise we made.”

She looks up at me, her cheeks a bright red, a wide grin spread across her face.

“You need not worry about him. Batu left long before our mating in order to patrol. He would not have interrupted.”

Her cheeks turn an even deeper shade of red.
